Welcome To The Family Of God:

Now that you have said “yes” to Jesus by placing your faith and trust in Him for the forgiveness of your sins and eternal salvation, the Bible says you have been “adopted” into the family of God (Ephesians 1:5). This is the beginning of a life long journey to become more like Christ in your everyday life (2 Corinthians 3:18). Accepting Christ as your Lord was the first step in following Jesus but don’t stop there!

3 Important Next Steps:

Below are three vital “next steps” that when followed, will help you reach your full potential for the kingdom of God. Pursuing these next steps are imperative for your spiritual well being and to grow closer to Christ.

  • Begin reading the Bible on a daily/consistent basis. I encourage you to download a Bible app from your app store and select a translation such as the “Holman Christian Standard Bible” (HCSB) or the “New American Standard Bible” (NASB). Most Bible apps feature “reading plans” where you can commit to a certain amount of reading each day and track your progress along the way! Furthermore, I suggest reading the Gospel of “John” located in the New Testament. This is a wonderful book to start your exploration of Jesus at a much deeper level.

  • Begin attending a local Bible centered Church in your area. The Christian walk is not meant to be done alone. God has called all believers to be part of a local church. This is where we can be rightly instructed in the teaching of God’s Word and be equipped for encouraging and helping one other in our daily lives (Ephesians 4:12). One great resource to assist you in finding a local Bible centered church is: www.sbc.net/churchsearch/

  • Begin establishing a personal prayer life. If the Bible can be considered the “vehicle” to know Christ better, it is your personal prayer life that fuels it. Prayers are your direct communication with the one true God. There is no wrong way to pray. Simply speak to him from your heart and know that He cares deeply about every detail of your life. In addition, I encourage you to journal your thoughts, impressions, and requests. This will enable you to both see and be reminded of, the great things that God has/will do as you put your trust in Him. Remember, A healthy relationship is impossible without communication and Christ desires a close relationship with you (1 John 4:10).

In closing, I want to stress that being a Christian is not marking off a “check list” of things to do. Following Jesus is truly a relationship that develops as you seek him to be first over all things. These three important steps outlined above will serve as the foundation for you to build on each day for the rest of your life.

God Bless,

Stephen Matthews
