Stephen Matthews is the Lead Pastor of The Crossing At Cypress. God gave him the passion and has been cultivating the vision for this church launch since 2009.
Stephen has been involved in church ministry since he was a young boy. His father Jerry was an ordained pastor and his mother Mary was a gifted worship leader. Their godly example resulted in Stephen’s personal growth in both of those ministry capacities from an early age. After being actively involved in worship and small group ministry most of his adult life, Stephen came to a turning point in his early thirties. It was during this time that he felt God’s calling on his life to shift his focus from worship/small group ministry to begin the task of formal preparation and training for pastoral ministry.
As a result of obedience to God’s pastoral calling on his life, Stephen is currently completing his “Biblical Studies” degree with a major in “Biblical Counseling” from the College Of Biblical Studies in Houston Texas. He is in the final stages of becoming a certified Biblical Counselor by the nationally recognized “ACBC” (Association Of Certified Biblical Counselors) and is also earning his “Certificate Of Study In Christian Apologetics” from Biola University. While "The Crossing At Cypress" is a non-denominational church launch, Pastor Stephen's overall theological and doctrinal views are in alignment with the doctrinal positions of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).
When asked about his passion for ministry, Stephen explained "My primary passion is to shepherd a congregation of people who, like me are far from perfect and understand their daily need for the grace of God. I desire to not only present Biblically sound messages but to also equip our congregation to understand WHY they should believe the Bible is true as a starting point. Uncompromising sermons, Christian apologetics, Biblical counseling, supporting life and growth through individual discipleship with compassion sums up my desire for ministry at The Crossing At Cypress."
Stephen has been married to the love of his life Amy for twelve years and both are proud parents of their three year old daughter Lydia and have two pugs (Lucy & Lilly) to round out the family. They have been foster parents in the past and will soon become active again. They are excited for opportunities to adopt children as God opens the doors. In his free time Stephen enjoys Christian apologetics/debates, playing (bass, drums, keys, guitar) and listening to music, watching NFL football (Go Rams!) and spending quality family time.
